Job Description: 

The Quality Control Technician performs routine testing and evaluation of results; tests and inspects products at various stages of production process. Compiles and evaluates data to maintain quality and reliability of products; completes supporting documentation and communicates results; completes assigned duties/projects by following well-defined standards and procedures. Meets customer needs to the best of the incumbents ability, in line with Siegwerk’s philosophy that the customer is the #1 priority. Adheres to all departmental/company policies and standards.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Performs routine testing and evaluation of results. Provides clear documentation, details issues to internal stakeholders, etc. 
  • Enters data in computer and communicates results to internal/external customers. Provides analyses and helps interpret data.
  • Completes batch analysis per customer requirements.
  • Helps calibrate instruments per calibration procedure.
  • Report malfunction of equipment to lead or manager to address and correct the problem. 
  • Follows correct Q.C. specification number and test procedure unless stated otherwise
  • Approves ink only if within specification as stated on the batch ticket and customer specific requirements.
  • Adjusts properties, to meet specifications.
  • Requests reformulation if needed. May interact with formulators relative to requests and problem solving.
  • Corrects discrepancies or missing information related to specifications. These discrepancies may be between Q.C. specification number, batch ticket, jacket, customer specific requirements, etc. If missing information, identifies that the batch doesn’t meet specification.
  • Documents test results on jackets for each batch ticket and initials jacket.
  • Attaches all samples for testing and color matching to the batch ticket; e.g., color and lamination tests.
  • Handles hazardous waste properly including dumping retain and lab samples, labeling containers etc.
  • Use judgment to determine if ink within specification should not ship.
  • Completes all needed paperwork, e.g., work off, swatches to customers, Certificates of Analysis, etc.
  • Ensures jackets and retains are kept and stored or filed properly.
  • Supports others to improve processes and troubleshoot, such as: Assisting in problem solving when inks require rework; Conducting lab work for customer complaints or production problems related to a specific batch of ink; Investigating the root cause and suggesting prevention or solution to problems.
  • Restocks consumable, such as paper stocks, file jackets, retain jars, films, etc.
  • Completes lab upkeep, cleaning, attending scheduled meetings, etc.
  • May assist in other areas as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

One-year certificate from college or technical school or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge of Chemistry preferred.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills required.
  • Knowledge of related raw materials, ink systems, production processes, available resources and equipment, preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, ratios, formula breakdowns, etc. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to interpret test results, required. 
  • Basic knowledge/experience of Windows, Word, Outlook (Microsoft Office) strongly preferred.   A variety of lab and office equipment, which may include: Proofer, pHmeter, Gloss Meter, Heat Sealer, Oven, Mixer, Shaker, Disperser, Scales, K-Coater, Slide Angle, COF Tester, Corona Treater, Horiba, Capillary Melting Point Apparatus, Opacity meter, X-Rite (Spectrodensitomer), Rub Tester, Computer, Copy Machine, Calculator, etc.
